InuYasha - Vol 10 - The Scars of Battle
Anime.Action Viz
028: Miroku Falls Into a Dangerous Trap!
029: Sango's Suffering and Kohaku's Life
030: Tetsusaiga is Stolen! Showdown at Naraku's Castle

The cast of Rumiko Takahasi's "feudal fairy tale" begins to discover both the extent and the limits of their powers, as director Masashi Ikeda sets the machinery for the ultimate battle into place. Sango recognizes that she will betray her comrades, if she thinks it will restore the life of her brother Kohaku. Miroku learns that the curse that afflicts his right hand may shorten his life. Inu-Yasha discovers just how formidable a weapon the Tetsusaiga, the enchanted sword carved from one of his father's fangs, can be. The evil demon Naraku is stunned to find that Kagome's arrows strike with the same deadly force as her ancestor Kikyo's. But the characters don't yet fully comprehend the source of their magical strengths and weaknesses, so they will have to grow as they learn--and the story continues. InuYasha - Vol 11 - Into the Miasma
Anime.Action Viz
031: Jinenji, Kind Yet Sad
032: Kikyo & InuYasha, Into the Miasma
033: Kikyo, Captured by Naraku

Director Masashi Ikeda evokes Beauty and the Beast when Kagome defends the gentle but monstrous half-demon Jenenji from an angry mob. After witnessing her kindness, Inu-Yasha reveals how he suffered because he was neither fully human nor fully demon, and rejected by all. Naraku draws his webs of deceit and fear ever tighter: as Kagome's arrow damaged his physical body, he's been pitting demons in deadly battles, so he can take the ultimate victor's body as his own. The resurrected Kikyo could have stopped this spell, but doesn't. She takes the laboriously assembled shards of the sacred jewel from Kagome and gives them to Naraku, mocking him with the revelation that for all his evil, he remains only a half-demon. As the story builds to its climax, excitement and adventure replace much of the earlier comedy. (Unrated, suitable for ages 13 and older: violence, grotesque imagery) --Charles Solomon

InuYasha - Vol 12 - Swords of Destiny
Anime.Action Viz
034: Tetsusaiga and Tenseiga
035: The True Owner of the Great Sword
036: Kagome Kidnapped by Koga the Wolf-Demon

Familiar and unfamiliar foes come to the fore as a new season of Rumiko Takahashi's "feudal fairy tale" begins. The eccentric Totosai, who forged the sword Tetsusaiga from a demon's fang, challenges Inu-Yasha to master its secret power: the Wind Scar that enables the bearer draw on vortices of demon-energy. Totosai also created an equally powerful sword for Inu-Yasha's brother Sesshomaru: the Tenseiga, a sword that heals--a typically imaginative Takahashi juxtaposition. Before Inu-Yasha can resolve his conflict with Sesshomaru, he must face Koga, the leader of a tribe of wolf-demons who kidnaps Kagome. To rescue her, the cast joins the battle between the wolf-demons and the harpy-like birds of paradise. After the intense adventures of the previous episodes, director Masashi Ikeda slows the pace a little, and mixes more humor into the quest for the Sacred Jewel fragments. Viewers curious to know more about how the series was made and its relationship to the manga should pick up the handsome and informative The Art of Inu-Yasha: Collection of Original Illustrations by Rumiko Takahashi. InuYasha - Vol 13 - Den of Wolves
Anime.Action Viz
037: The Man Who Fell In Love With Kagome
038: Two Hearts, One Mind
039: Trapped in a Duel to the Death

The quest for the shards of the Sacred Jewel recedes as the filmmakers explore the emotional core of the story. When Koga the Wolf-Demon declares he's in love with Kagome, Inu-Yasha throws a jealous tantrum. After he destroys the monstrous birds of paradise, Kagome won't let him fight Koga, who was injured in the battle. Inu-Yasha's ensuing tantrum so infuriates Kagome, she returns to the present. Once they're separated, Kagome and Inu-Yasha miss each other, as Ranma and Akane would. Shippo, Miroku, and Sango eagerly follow all the complications. But while Kagome and Inu-Yasha have been trying to make peace, Naraku has been setting a deadly trap that pits Koga against Inu-Yasha in a duel to the death. It all adds up to the top-flight entertainment fans expect from a Takahashi story. Viewers curious to know more about how the series was made and its relationship to the manga should pick up the handsome and informative The Art of Inu-Yasha: Collection of Original Illustrations by Rumiko Takahashi. InuYasha - Vol 14 - The Wind and the Void
Anime.Action Viz
040: The Deadly Trap of the Wind Sorceress, Kagura
041: Kagura's Dance and Kanna's Mirror
042: The Wind Scar, Defeated

The evil Naraku has gathered nearly all of the scattered fragments of the magic Shikon Jewel and his powers have increased enormously. He creates two avatar-servants from his own essence: Kagura, Sorceress of the Wind, and Kanna, Sorceress of the Void. They attack Kagome, Inu-Yasha, and their friends, separately and together, but Kagome defeats the evil apparitions with her arrows, saving Inu-Yasha's life. The knowledge that Kikyo stole the Jewel shards and gave them to Naraku wounds Inu-Yasha more deeply than any weapon. Is the Kikyo who was brought back from the dead by sorcery really Kagome's ancestor and Inu-Yasha's lost love? Although these episodes contain plenty of action and emotional moments, the story recaps keep getting longer. The results feel padded, as if the filmmakers were trying to fill the time. (Unrated: suitable for ages 13 and older: violence, grotesque imagery, brief nudity) --Charles Solomon

InuYasha - Vol 15 - Broken Fang
Anime.Action Viz
043: Tetsusaiga Breaks
044: Kaijinbo's Evil Sword
045: Sesshomaru Wields Tokijin

The filmmakers recapture the sense of urgency that was absent from the last episodes as the tone of the story darkens. Naraku creates a third "incarnation": the monster Goshinki, who bites Inu-Yasha's sword Tetsusaiga in half, forcing him to transform into a full demon to slay his attacker. Sesshomaru takes Goshinki's head to the evil swordsmith Kaijinbo: he turns it into the Tokijin, a sword that preserves the demon's hatred. Totosai reforges Tetsusaiga, made heavier by Inu-Yasha's own fang, which bonds it. Four secrets emerge that will be the focus of the next episodes: (1) Tetsusaiga controls the demon side of Inu-Yasha's nature; (2) when Inu-Yasha learns to wield the heavier Tetsusaiga, he will discover his true strength; (3) Kagome fears losing Inu-Yasha to the demon side of his nature; and (4) Kikyo is planning to destroy Naraku and the Shikon Jewel. InuYasha - Vol 17 - Shattered Memories
Anime.Action Viz
049: Kohaku's Lost Memory
050: That Unforgettable Face
051: InuYasha's Soul, Devoured

The fractious and unresolved relationship between Kagome and Inu-Yasha recedes into the background as they and their companions confront Naraku's latest scheme. The demon-lord has taken control of Sango's younger brother Kohaku, and is using the young man as an assassin. But even Naraku's powers have limits: the kindness of Sango and Kagome touch Kohaku's still-human heart. Inu-Yasha's suavely sinister brother Sesshomaru visits a 2,000-year-old magnolia tree whose branches were used to make the sheathes for the enchanted swords Tetsusaiga and Tenseiga. From the tree-spirit, Sesshomaru learns that Inu-Yasha's half-human/half-demon nature may eventually reduce him to a mindless killing machine. Sesshomaru wants to destroy Inu-Yasha almost as much as Naraku, but Kagome's largely untapped powers and the awesome magic of the nearly restored Shikon Jewel remain the wild cards in their deadly game. 058: Fateful Night in Togenkyo, Part II
059: The Beautiful Sister Apprentices
060: The 50 Year-Old Curse of the Dark Priestess

Although these episodes contain some dramatic action, the stories focus on the emotional bonds that link the characters. By working together, Kagome, Shippo, Miroku, and Inu-Yasha defeat the gargantuan "sage" who sought to create an elixir of immortality. Director Yusunao Aoki uses CG skillfully to show the destruction of a cursed tree by Kagome and Inu-Yasha. Sango and Miroku continue their cautious courtship--until Miroku makes yet another ill-considered pass. Shippo watches and sighs, "Please don't let me grow up to be like him." The adventure takes a sinister turn when Naraku summons Tsubaki, the Dark Priestess who tried to steal the Shikon Jewel from Kikyo a half-century earlier. Tsubaki uses her evil magic to take possession of Kagome and make her attack Inu-Yasha, but the teenage heroine proves more difficult to control than the sorceress anticipated. Drama--and the main thread of the narrative--once again take a back seat to comedy when fox-spirit Shippo receives a challenge from the last surviving relative of the Thunder Brothers from episodes 9 and 10. Koryu is not the menacing demon Shippo fears, but a cute little girl who is just his equal in power. As Shippo was the only member of the team who hadn't been paired off, seasoned anime viewers will recognize a fractious romance in the making. Naraku punishes Kagura for her planned rebellion and dispatches his latest monster: the murderous Faceless Man. This menace is intimately linked to Onigumo, the thief Kikyo treated 50 years earlier (and who became Naraku). The Faceless Man senses the link between Kikyo and Kagome, and seizes Kagome when she returns from the present day. (Unrated, suitable for ages 13 and older: violence, grotesque imagery, brief nudity) --Charles Solomon
