Excel Saga - The Imperfect Collection
Anime.Comedy A.D. Vision
Hail Il Palazzo!

The first time I had the pleasure of watching Excel Saga, I was completely blown away by HOW FUNNY this series was!

To say the truth, it has to be one of the funniest things out there, which is quite surprising, as I'm sure Koshi Rikdo (the author) was not expecting this kind of success from such an extreme parody as Excel Saga.

The characters are amazing, and you will instantly detect similarities to some familiar faces in other series, like Love Hina , Fist of the North Star and Dragon Ball Z. The contributions of the amazing Mitsuishi Kotono (oh Misato...) and Minami Omi, as Excel and Hyatt respectively, greatly add to this, even though I believe Excel was "pushing it a bit too far" at some points, and quite frankly I felt like putting a bullet through my/her head! But well, that's what Excel Saga is all about, taking it a step TOO far.

SO far that even the directors have managed to insert themselves into the series, just take a look at some of the characters like Nabeshin, who is ACTUALLY: Wata[nabe Shin]ichi! (Who, by the way, looks EXACTLY like Nabeshin!)

The only thing I have left to say is: If you're looking for a good laugh and enjoy extreme comedy/parody Anime, you're in for the ride of your life! Excel Saga is guaranteed fun for most of the series' 26 episodes and if you can bare with Excel's constant and irritating babbling without shooting yourself, you will CERTAINLY laugh like never before!

Firefly - The Complete Series
SciFi.Fantasy 20th Century Fox NR
As the 2005 theatrical release of "Serenity" made clear, "Firefly" was a science fiction concept that deserved a second chance. Devoted fans (or "Browncoats") knew it all along, and with this well-packaged DVD set, those who missed the show's original broadcasts can see what they missed. Creator Joss Whedon's ambitious science-fiction Western (Whedon's third series after "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel") was canceled after only 11 of these 14 episodes had aired on the Fox network, but history has proven that its demise was woefully premature. Whedon's generic hybrid got off to a shaky start when network executives demanded an action-packed one-hour premiere ("The Train Job"); in hindsight the intended two-hour pilot (also titled "Serenity," and oddly enough, the final episode aired) provides a better introduction to the show's concept and splendid ensemble cast. Obsessive fans can debate the quirky logic of combining spaceships with direct parallels to frontier America (it's 500 years in the future, and embattled humankind has expanded into the galaxy, where undeveloped "outer rim" planets struggle with the equivalent of Old West accommodations), but Whedon and his gifted co-writers and directors make it work, at least well enough to fashion a credible context from the incongruous culture-clashing of past, present, and future technologies, along with a polyglot language (the result of two dominant superpowers) that combines English with an abundance of Chinese slang.
What makes it work is Whedon's delightfully well-chosen cast and their nine well-developed characters--a typically Whedon-esque extended family--each providing a unique perspective on their adventures aboard "Serenity", the junky but beloved "Firefly-class" starship they call home. As a veteran of the disadvantaged Independent faction's war against the all-powerful planetary Alliance (think of it as Underdogs vs. Overlords), "Serenity" captain Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) leads his compact crew on a quest for survival. They're renegades with an amoral agenda, taking any job that pays well, but "Firefly"'s complex tapestry of right and wrong (and peace vs. violence) is richer and deeper than it first appears. Tantalizing clues about Blue Sun (an insidious mega-corporation with a mysteriously evil agenda), its ties to the Alliance, and the traumatizing use of "Serenity"'s resident stowaway (Summer Glau) as a guinea pig in the development of advanced warfare were clear indications "Firefly" was heading for exciting revelations that were precluded by the series' cancellation. Fortunately, the big-screen "Serenity" (which can be enjoyed independently of the series) ensured that Whedon's wild extraterrestrial west had not seen its final sunset. Its very existence confirms that these 14 episodes (and enjoyable bonus features) will endure as irrefutable proof Fox made a glaring mistake in canceling the series. "--Jeff Shannon"

Frailty
Horror Lions Gate R
Steeped in gloomy atmosphere, "Frailty" locates its horror in the tyranny of religious fanaticism. Making an assured directorial debut, actor Bill Paxton costars as a Texas widower who believes God has recruited him to destroy demons in human form. Feeling divinely justified in committing a series of ax murders (discreetly unseen), he urges his two young sons to assist him in the killings--a living nightmare recalled in flashback by one of the now-adult sons (Matthew McConaughey) to the FBI agent (Powers Boothe) who's investigating the murders. But mystery is of secondary importance in Brent Hanley's cleverly twisting screenplay; "Frailty" suggests, with unsettling subtlety, that Paxton's mission may not be delusional, thus burdening his deadly wrath with spiritually disturbing significance. It's definitely not a feel-good film, but with celebrity endorsements by Stephen King and directors James Cameron and Sam Raimi (who both made films with Paxton), "Frailty" gets under the skin with insidious efficiency. Full Metal Panic! - Mission 02
Anime.Action A.D. Vision
Episode 05: Whispered
Episode 06: Still Alive
Episode 07: Boy Meets Girl
Episode 08: Part-Time Steady

Sousuke and the other members of the Mithril corps stage a daring rescue of Kaname and her class from the terrorist kidnappers. Although he's a crack mecha pilot, Sousuke defeats the traitor Gauron with help from Kaname, who taps into her unconscious knowledge of the mysterious, powerful "Black Technology." Sousuke may cut a heroic figure in a battle, but as a student at Jindai High, he's the ultimate fish out of water. He and Kaname have begun to acknowledge their affection for one another, but she still tries to beat some sense into him, physically and verbally. This second group of episodes combines exceptionally well-choreographed mecha battles with raucous slapstick comedy. Lively vocal performances by Chris Patton (Sousuke) and Luci Christian (Kaname) lend credibility their characters' often radical shifts in mood. Full Metal Panic! - Mission 03
Anime.Action A.D. Vision
Episode 09: Dangerous Safe House
Episode 10: Run Running Run
Episode 11: Behemoth Awakening
Episode 12: One Night Stand

Director Koichi Chigira cranks up the action and the comedy as a new enemy appears in this rambunctious adventure. The terrorist cell A21 has a murderous pawn in Takuma, who uses the mysterious Lambda Drive to control a gargantuan crimson mecha. Sousuke defeats him in a dynamic duel, aided by Kaname and Commander Teletha "Tess" Testarossa. But the effects-laden battle is just a prelude to a more subtle but more dangerous conflict: Tess announces she's fallen for Sgt. Sousuke, and "may the best girl win!" Fortunately, Sousuke is too dense to notice. Assertive, independent, and capable of initiating action, Kaname represents new breed of magical girl. She never whines, the way Hitomi does in Escaflowne, and she's quite capable of braining Sousuke when he sticks his foot in it for the umpteenth time. The result is an imaginative, high-spirited entertainment. (Rated 15 and older: violence, brief nudity, risqué humor) --Charles Solomon

Full Metal Panic! - Mission 04
Anime.Action A.D. Vision
Episode 13: A Cat and a Kitten's Rock & Roll
Episode 14: Is Narashino Burning
Episode 15: The Wind Blows at Home, Part I

The characters (and plot) take off for some R & R in episodes 13 and 14, as Commander "Tess" and Melissa Mao stage a mecha duel to settle a petty quarrel. Sousuke coaches Tess while Kurz acts as Melissa's second (loser runs a lap around the base naked). While Kaname vacillates between boredom and irritation at a seaside resort that falls far short of her dreams of summer romance, Sousuke is temporarily reassigned to a special intelligence mission to assassinate the terrorist Gauron. In far-off Helmajistan, the older, hardened veterans in the unit refuse to listen to Sousuke's warnings about the threat of the Lambda Driver, placing the mission and its members in deadly peril in a cliffhanger ending. Director Koichi Chigira choreographs the mecha battles with his usual panache, and skillfully juxtaposes Kaname's and Sousuke's actions. (Rated 15 and older: violence, risqué humor, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

Full Metal Panic! - Mission 05
Anime.Action A.D. Vision
Episode 16: The Wind Blows at Home, Part II
Episode 17: The Wind Blows at Home, Part III
Episode 18: Deep Sea Party

The campaign in Helmajistan continues, with Mithril officers assigned to assassinate the terrorist Gauron and capture a nuclear warhead. Sousuke's character is shown in more depth as he demonstrates his skill at desert warfare, and flashbacks reveal how he became a guerilla fighter at the age of 8. Although he and Kaname pine when they're separated, they immediately begin squabbling when they're reunited. Sousuke gets in trouble, first for building a prison-style security tower at a high school festival, then for inviting Kaname to spend a week on a tropical island--a romantic vacation that turns out to be business visit to Mithril HQ. This "romantic" jaunt is complicated by an unexpected skydiving episode and a trip aboard a top secret submarine. Even as the menace grows, Director Koichi Chigira strikes a deft balance between adventure and farce. (Rated 15 and older: violence, risqué humor, nudity, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

Full Metal Panic! - Mission 06
Anime.Action A.D. Vision NR
Episode 19: Engaging Six and Seven
Episode 20: Venom's Flame
Episode 21: Deep Trap

As the first season of Full Metal Panic nears its conclusion, the episodes shift dramatically in tone. The filmmakers pause for a flashback as Sergeant-Major Mao explains to Kaname and Commander Tess how she first met Sousuke and Kurz. Later, Tess warns Kaname that their abilities as Whispereds enable them to form a powerful but potentially dangerous telepathic link. Director Koichi Chigira unleashes a powerful mecha assault, whose violent action packs even more punch after the prolonged respite. Although he's still traumatized by the loss of his fellow agents in Helmajistan, Sousuke has to lead the attack on Gauron's new super-mecha, Venom. Turncoats among the Mithril personnel aboard the submarine De Danaan free Gauron, who seizes control of the powerful vessel. Episode 21 ends in a classic cliffhanger as the final, deadly confrontation takes shape. (Rated 15 and older: violence, risqué humor, nudity, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

Full Metal Panic! - Mission 07
Anime.Action A.D. Vision
Episode 22: Jack in the Box
Episode 23: Field of Giants
Episode 24: Into the Blue

The terrorist Gauron has commandeered the Mithril submarine De Danaan, but the telepathic bond between Commander Tess and Kaname enables them to regain control of the powerful vessel. Sousuke leads the counterattack against the brutal pirates with some assistance from Kurz and Mao, and the struggle inevitably ends in a man-to-man duel between Sousuke and Gauron. Director Koichi Chigira pulls out all the stops in their mecha knife fight, which is played against some impressive CG special effects, including torpedoes exploding underwater and the De Danaan breaching like a humpback whale. To no one's surprise, things end happily, with Kaname and Sousuke finally recognizing and accepting their mutual attraction. The second season of this lively comedy-adventure, Full Metal Panic Fumoffu, has already aired in Japan, and will probably be released in the U.S. soon. (Rated 15 and older: violence, risqué humor, nudity, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon
