Mystery Men
Comedy Universal Studios PG-13
Ever wonder if there was a class system in the world of superheroes? After all the big names like Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, etc., who were the supporting players? The folks assigned to the less-than-stellar gigs of saving only a small part of the world? According to this intermittently successful send-up of comic book heroism, there are indeed masked heroes who struggle and toil for their moment in the super sun. Based on the Dark Horse comic book series, "Mystery Men" follows the travails of three B-list avengers--Mr. Furious (Ben Stiller), the Shoveler (William H. Macy), and the Blue Raja (Hank Azaria)--as they fight to make themselves known to the citizens of Champion City, quite difficult to do when the flashy Captain Amazing (Greg Kinnear, never better) takes all the cool gigs "and" has product endorsements up the ying-yang. According to them, it's all a matter of timing--never mind that Mr. Furious never rises above a snit, or that the Blue Raja wears green. Their big break comes when Captain Amazing is abducted by the evil Casanova Frankenstein (Geoffrey Rush), and it's up to this motley crew to save Champion City.
Blessed with a wondrously gifted comic cast and full of droll details, "Mystery Men" struggles in fits and spurts towards its climax. Transcendently witty in parts, it's also woefully sophomoric in others. Literally, this is the kind of movie in which someone gets off a brilliant line and then sits on a fork. Still, when this movie is rolling, it's gleefully on target, thanks primarily to the mordantly cocky Stiller and Janeane Garofalo as a latecomer to the superhero gang; her secret weapon is a bowling ball in which her dead father's head is encased. The comic chemistry between these two is fierce, and when you add the dryly funny Macy and the endearing Azaria (who finally gets a chance to let loose with his comic gifts), it's a hilarious joyride. Too bad that the gas tank is only half-full; this stunning cast deserves a first-rate vehicle. With Tom Waits as a weapons expert, Claire Forlani as the requisite babe, and Paul Reubens as the Spleen, the world's most flatulent superhero. "--Mark Englehart"

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
Anime.Adventure.Fantasy Studio Ghibli / Buena Vista PG
Hayao Miyazaki gained widespread attention in Japan for his complex ecological manga series, "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind" (1982), which he adapted for the screen two years later. One thousand years after a war devastated much of the Earth, humanity clings to existence at the fringes of a vast, polluted forest inhabited by monstrous insects. Only Nausicaä, the princess of the tiny realm of the Valley of the Wind, grasps the environmental significance of the forest. She sees beyond petty wars and national rivalries to the only viable future for the planet. In "Nausicaä", Miyazaki began to explore elements he would develop more fully in his later films: daring, compassionate heroines; exciting flying sequences; colorful side characters; strong interpersonal relationships; and a call for an ecologically sustainable way of life. Nausicaä prefigures Sheeta in "Castle in the Sky" and Chihiro in "Spirited Away", just as the rough and ready Asbel anticipates Pazu in "Castle in the Sky" and Ashitaka in "Princess Mononoke". For years, "Nausicaä" was available in the United States only as the badly re-edited "Warriors of the Wind". The new English dub from Disney presents the film in its entirety, with strong vocal performances by Uma Thurman, Patrick Stewart, Alison Lohman, and Edward James Olmos. (Rated PG: violence, frightening imagery) "--Charles Solomon"

Neon Genesis Evangelion's trailblazing blend of action and philosophy immediately elevated it above the pack and accounts for its enduring popularity. The series, which originally aired in Japan from 1995 to 1996, has exerted a strong influence on anime ever since.

004: The Sound of Waves
005: Les Soldats

In Paris, professional assassin Mireille Bouquet meets emotionally shattered Kirika Yumura: neither woman can remember her past, but they're both extremely good at killing people. (Kirika doesn't even look--she just points the gun and fires and her victim falls.) The two women form a partnership as "Noir," but after a couple of murders for hire, they realize someone is trying to kill them. The mysterious Soldats seem to be everywhere, so it's kill or be killed. The only recurring characters in Noir are amnesiacs, who are essentially blank slates and therefore not very interesting. Director Kouichi Mashimo may set a new record for repeating footage in an animated series--some shots crop up three times in a single episode, including portentous images whose significance is more apparent than real. The result feels like a watered-down combination of Gunsmith Cats and Serial Experiments Lain. (Rated 15 and older: violence, grotesque imagery) --Charles Solomon

012: Assasination Mission

In Paris, Mireille and Kirika prepare to kill a crooked police officer but find a mysterious assassin has gotten there first. When they go to complete the mission by shooting a corrupt judge, they meet Chloe, who's even better with a gun or knife than they are. In addition to the judge, the three women shoot about half the gendarmes in Paris escaping an ambush. Chloe is tied to "the Soldats," the sinister, omnipresent organization that has been hounding Mireille and Kirika. Chloe and Kirika share a bond, but its nature isn't made clear: Chloe understands the link, but doesn't say anything; Kirika realizes some sort of link exists, but doesn't know why. The long stretches of silence as the characters walk around or stare into space make these episodes feel both padded and stilted. (Rated 15 and older: violence, grotesque imagery, alcohol and tobacco use, ethnic stereotypes) --Charles Solomon

Now and Then
Comedy New Line Home Video PG-13
This obligatory girls' version of "Stand by Me" begins with actors Melanie Griffith, Rita Wilson, Demi Moore, and Rosie O'Donnell doing a lousy job of playing adult versions of the film's youthful protagonists. The idea is that this quartet of characters is having a reunion, which serves as a preface to the main story about school chums who make a pact to stay close and supportive through thick and thin. The trouble is that Griffith, Moore, Wilson, and O'Donnell look like they've rehearsed their scenes for no more than a few minutes, and after boring us silly there's little reason to get excited about anything else. Still, it's nice to have a supporting cast that includes Janeane Garofalo and Bonnie Hunt, while among the girls are three young actresses who have been burning up the road in recent years: Christina Ricci ("The Opposite of Sex"), Thora Birch ("A Clear and Present Danger"), and Gaby Hoffmann ("Strike").
